What is GREENGUARD Certification?

Okay, so what’s off-gassing?

So, why is off-gassing potentially bad?

So, what does being GREENGUARD Certified mean, then?

What is GREENGUARD Certifications?

Simply put, the GREENGUARD Certification program offers manufactures like MITY a standard to follow for creating low chemical emissions or, “off-gassing” in the products our brands create before our furniture comes into your homes or businesses.

Okay, So What’s Off-Gassing?

As they age, materials can off-gas volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other chemicals. Products that contain glues, paints and foam are generally the highest emitters of VOCs. That unmistakable smell of a new car, or new paint and carpet when you walk into a room—these are examples of VOCs and chemical off-gassing.

So, Why is Off-Gassing Potentially Bad?

Good question. When these VOCs build up indoors, the air we breathe can become unhealthy, sometimes causing issues like headaches, nausea, dizziness, or perhaps even more serious issues like cardiovascular disease, reproductive disorders or cancer.

Why Should I Trust a GREENGUARD Certification?

Another excellent question! First, GREENGUARD Certification is overseen by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) Environment. UL is a global safety certification company that’s been around for over 120 years and is one of several companies approved to perform safety testing by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or OSHA (you’re probably familiar with OSHA; they’re the federal agency that makes sure factories and workplaces in the U.S. are safe for workers). UL helps companies support the responsible development and production of safer, more sustainable, and environmentally healthy products. You’ll find the UL certification mark on many of your electrical appliances and products.

It looks like this:

So, What Does Being GREENGUARD Certified Mean, Then?

UL’s GREENGUARD Certification program is recognized across the globe by sustainable building programs and building codes. Being GREENGUARD Certified means that a product is scientifically proven to meet rigorous chemical emissions standards, ensuring that a product or material has low chemical emissions and improves the quality for the air in which it’s used.

How Does a Product Get To Be GREENGUARD Certified?

Qualifying for GREENGUARD Certification means the products built by MITY brands are put into a dynamic environmental chamber with very powerful chemical measuring sensors to see just how many VOCs they’re off-gassing into the environment. (It’s very Dexter’s Laboratory.) Our products are screened for over 10,000 chemicals and pollutants, ensuring that what you breathe indoors is not compromised by exposure from our products.

What Products Manufactured By MITY Brands are GREENGUARD Certified?

We continue to work very hard to make sure our products are GREENGUARD or GREENGUARD GOLD Certified.

  • Our entire line of MityLite products, other than our Madera tables, are also GREENGUARD Certified.
  • All MityLite tables, except Madera tables, are GREENGUARD Gold Certified.

We’re excited to grow this list as our brands continue to submit products for GREENGUARD Certification.
